6 Creative Ways to Keep Kids Busy This Summer

July 11, 2019

Summer is finally here, and school is finally out! While we love having the kids home for summer, the routine of going to the park and pool can get old quickly. Here are 6 creative ways you can beat boredom and keep kids busy during summer vacation.

  1. Host a neighborhood scavenger hunt.

Scavenger hunts are a fun and exciting way to get kids outside with their friends. Make a checklist of 8-12 things for them to find and photograph-- a yellow house, the number nine, or an American flag--and host a friendly competition to see who can find everything on their list first.

  1. Tour police or fire departments.

Many police and fire departments offer free tours of their station. Call ahead and ask if you can bring a group of kids to learn what their heroes do behind the scenes.

  1. Set up a lemonade stand.

No summer vacation is complete without a lemonade stand. Spend some time making a fun sign and set up a stand in your front yard. You can serve classic lemonade or whip up something a little more unique. We love these delicious lemonade recipes from PureWow.

  1. Visit the library.

Many libraries have summer reading programs created just for kids on summer vacation. Sign kids up for your local library’s program, check out a few books, and schedule some time just for reading each day. After they’ve finished a batch of books, go back for more and claim prizes just for reading the books they love.

  1. Make homemade gifts.

Rainy days are the perfect time for arts and crafts. We love these easy gift ideas for kids from Parents. Plus, if you get started now, you’ll be all set by the time the holidays roll around!

  1. Go camping in your backyard.

You don’t have to travel far to have a good time in the great outdoors–you can do it right in your backyard! Pitch a tent and plan an eventful evening full of stargazing, games, s’mores, and more. How do you keep your kids entertained during the summer? Share your ideas in the comments!
